Maxwell, Jones Share Morgan
Park ASBK Wins
T
eam Suzuki ECSTAR's
Wayne Maxwell and Des-
mosport Ducati rider Mike
Jones took one win apiece in
the fourth round of the Aus-
tralian Superbike Champion-
ship (ASBK) at Morgan Park in
Queensland, July 6-7.
Jones took pole for Ducati
and streaked clear to a
2.164-second win over Maxwell
and Yamaha Racing's Cru Hal-
liday in race one, and was on
track to repeat the performance
in race two before running off
the track and dropping to 14th.
A resurgent ride, however, saw
Jones climb back onto the
podium in third place and take
a one-point lead over Halliday in
the championship table.
"I'm just really disappointed
to make that mistake so early
on in the race," Jones said. "It
was such a small mistake, but it
cost me dearly. I just gave it 110
percent and rode my way back
to the third position—I'm obvious-
ly very happy with that, but it's
obviously disappointing because
I know what could've been if I
didn't make that small mistake at
the beginning."
Maxwell's win came after
a huge battle with reigning
champion Troy Herfoss (Penrite
Honda Racing) over the 16-lap
duration, with Jones rounding
out the podium.
Jones now leads the series
on 184 to Halliday's 183. Former
champion Bryan Staring (Kawa-
saki) is third on 176 with Herfoss
fourth on 169 and Maxwell fifth
on 158. CN
Mike Jones leads the charge in race one of Morgan Park's ASBK round.
