Sequoia National Forest… Warren Reid and Brian Myerscough were
some of the big winners at the Mammoth Mountain Motocross… After
winning at Carlsbad, Gerrit Wolsink went on to win the next GP round

We put "Bailey Beats Europeans!" on the cover of Cycle News 50 years
ago. That's because Gary Bailey beat Swede MX star Stig Petterson,
Arne Kring and other Europeans at the Firecracker International Motocross
at Saddleback Park. He did it on Independence Day, too. Bailey and Kring
actually traded 1-3 moto finishes, but Bailey had quicker overall times,
which was then used to break ties. We said Bailey was "the first American
to beat the Europeans at their own game"… We had coverage of the San
Jose Mile. The winner? Jim Rice.
(Left) When Marty Tripes was
"on," like he was at RedBud 40
years ago, no one could beat
him—not even Bob Hannah.
