LOOKING BACK
Gary Scott and Mickey Fay were featured on the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago to accompany our coverage of the Santa Fe TT and
Columbus Half Mile… Mike Bell and Bob Hannah made it a Yamaha
sweep at the AMA 500/250cc National Championship Motocross at
Lakewood Sportcycle Park in Colorado… Drew Smith, riding a Suzuki
PE250, took the overall win at the Mt. Baker AMA Two-Day ISDE
Qualifier in Washington… We tested the 1979 Kawasaki KX400, which
sold for $1,694.

Eddie Wirth was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago.
He captured his first career national win at the 25-lap AMA TT National
Championship at Santa Fe Speedway in Hinsdale, Illinois… We covered the
20-lap Charity Newsies Half-Mile in Columbus, Ohio. Approximately 25,000
fans watched Mert Lawwill take the win… Team Ocelot (Dave Damron
and Art Bauman) won the 6-Hour Production class at Willow Springs,
while Texans Virgil Davenport and Rusty Bradley led the way to the 12-
Hour win... We covered the 200-Mile Mike Stewart Memorial Enduro in
Tillamook, Oregon.
