LOOKING BACK
Rick Woods was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago in
classic speedway racing form while competing at the U.S. Championships
at Whiteman Stadium in Pacoima, California… We also followed the
adventures of two high school boys who, with a backpack full of pistons,
rode their Yamaha DT-1s 1700-plus miles south from La Jolla, California,
to La Paz, Baja California, and back north to San Felipe. Their parents met
them there, and they loaded up their bikes in a truck and drove home.
A photo of Bob Hannah was on the front page of Cycle News 40 years
ago. Hannah and Kent Howerton traded 250cc moto wins at Georgia's
Atlanta International Raceway, but Hannah came away with the overall
win. Danny LaPorte won both 500cc motos… Michigan racers Jay
Springsteen (winner), Garth Brow and Scott Parker swept the podium
at the Chesapeake National Half Mile at Laurel Harness Raceway in
Maryland… Bernie Schreiber and Marland Whaley traded a win at the
AMA/NATC Trials opener in New York.
