The opening round of the 1999 AMA National MX Series was held at
Glen Helen Raceway and we featured the 250cc- and 125cc-class
winners—Sebastien Tortelli and Ricky Carmichael—on the cover 20
years ago… Jay Springsteen was also shown on the cover for winning
the Hagerstown Half Mile… We reported that Mick Doohan had suffered
multiple serious injuries when he crashed during Friday's 500cc World
Championship qualifying at Jerez. One of those injuries was to his leg
that he had already badly broken in 1992. Alex Crivelle won the race.
We featured the Meadowlands Supercross doubleheader on the cover
of Cycle News 30 years ago. Damon Bradshaw and Jeff Stanton
got equal airtime after splitting the wins… Scott Russell captured his
first AMA Superbike National win in his home state of Georgia at Road
Atlanta… Larry Roeseler took the overall win at the AMA National
Reliability Trials Series round at the John Zink Ranch in Oklahoma…
Kevin Schwantz crashed out of a sure World Championship Road
Race win at Jerez. Eddie Lawson
took the victory.
