LOOKING BACK
"Miss Carlsbad" Ellie Adelson posing with Dave Damron, alongside
another racer, during an AFM Road Racing event at Carlsbad Raceway,
was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago… We covered
the Cherry Creek Hare & Hound in Utah. Al Roger took the win for the
second year in a row… Saddleback Park hosted the Stump Jumpers
Grand Prix. Al Baker won the 250cc Amateur-Expert class and Chuck
Minter the 500cc class… Dusty Coppage won a local flat track at San
Jose's Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.
It was a great weekend for America motorcycle racing with Kenny
Roberts winning the 500cc Road Race GP and Brad Lackey the 500cc
Motocross GP in France. We celebrated their wins by printing their
names in large letters on the cover 40 years ago… We featured a profile
on road racer Dale Singleton… Jay Springsteen and Steve Eklund
battled it out at the AMA GNCC Short Track at Ascot Park. Springsteen
edged out Eklund for the win… Wayne Buckler defeated Terry Vance at
the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class in Louisiana.
