LOOKING BACK
We had some fun with our April Fool's issue 50 years ago. It's hard to
tell what was real and what was...well, fake news inside, but we do know
that Mike Patrick was the overall motorcycle winner at the Mint 400,
which we covered in issue number-12, 1969… We also covered the
second running of the popular Viewfinders Grand Prix, which was held in
Westlake Village, CA, and raced through actual movie sets. J.N. Roberts
was the 500cc Expert-class winner. More than 220 riders made up the
Novice class alone.
We were so excited, and rightfully so, about Kawasaki's latest
innovation—its new single-shock Uni-Trak rear suspension system for
its KX motocross bikes—that we put pictures of it on the cover 40 years
ago. The system went into production the following year in the KX125…
We featured an interview with Team Suzuki factory motocrosser Scott
Gillman… Saturday CMC motocross at Saddleback Park attracted top
pros eager to take home a piece of the $5000 purse. Ron Turner won
both the 250cc and 500cc Pro classes.
