LOOKING BACK
Rain postponed the Daytona 200 50 years ago, so we ran a photo from the
speedway of the 100-Mile AMA Amateur Championship. Ron Muir came
away with the victory. Wayne Barts, of Milwaukee, died after crashing in the
Sportsman Lightweight class. We reported that he was the first motorcycle
rider fatality since the speedway opened in 1959… John Penton won the
Alligator Enduro held near the Daytona Speedway… We had coverage of the
Stone Mountain Enduro, hosted by the Georgia Crackers M.C.
We featured our coverage of the Daytona 200 40 years ago. Pictured on
the front page was winner Dale "The Georgia Pig Farmer" Singleton;
Ron Pierce won the Superbike 100, and Skip Askland the International
Lightweight class… Jimmy "The Jammer" Weinert won the Daytona
Supercross after Bob Hannah surrendered the lead moments before
taking the checkered flag after having slowed down purposefully. Hannah
thought he had a bigger lead than he did and that Weinert was a lapper
instead of a rider actually trying to pass him for the win.
