LOOKING BACK
TT racing from Ascot Park, Scrambles racing from Salinas, and drag
racing from Bakersfield, California, were all pictured on the cover of
Cycle News 50 years ago. Mert Lawwill (18) was shown leading Dan
Haaby and Dusty Coppage at Ascot… We also covered TT racing from
California's high desert in Adelanto. One of the big winners was Bill
Bartel in the 250cc Expert class... The Groundshakers M.C. held its
European Scrambles in Las Vegas. Casey Folks won the 0-125cc class.
We featured a highly modified Kawasaki on the cover 40 years ago in
our Daytona preview issue. Steve McLaughlin and Harry Maillet went
about fixing the Z1000's handling woes with their special Racecrafters
Zee… We also featured an interview with the veteran road racer,
McLaughlin, as well as Reg Pridgmore who was about to embark on
what he hoped was his fourth superbike championship… We covered
a wet and muddy Atlanta Supercross from Atlanta Stadium, where Bob
Hannah slithered to the overall win.
