LOOKING BACK
A pair of unlucky flat trackers—Alex Armstrong and Lance Vallery—
tangled at Ascot Park and before they knew it, they were about to go
swimming in a pond located on the track's infield. The incident was
captured by Dennis Greene's camera and put on the cover of Cycle News
50 years ago. Skip Van Leeuwen managed to stay dry and was the
top racer that day… We covered the local MX scene, including racing at
Carlsbad, where one of the class winners, in the 125cc Junior division,
was Donnie Emler.
The Houston TT/Short Track, held inside the Astrodome, was featured
on the cover 40 years ago. The surprise TT winner was Mickey Fay who
rode a Honda XR500. The next day, Ted Boody topped the 20-lap short
track race… We covered the CMC Golden State Suzuki Series round at
Prairie City OHV Park, where Jeff Ward, Darrell Shultz and Rex Staten
came away with the pro-class wins… We ran an article that discussed
everything you needed to know about the proposed nationwide
mandatory helmet law.
