FEBRUARY 8, 1989
Washington's own Larry Ward was pictured on the cover 20 years ago
for winning the Seattle Supercross. Ward's first-ever win came at Seattle
nine years earlier. This was the final race held inside the Kingdome
before it was torn down to be replace by a new stadium; Nick Schmidt
finished second in the KTM Jr. SX Challenge… We interviewed road
racer Damon Buckmaster… We covered the IRTA Test at Phillip Island,
where Mick Doohan was came out on top.
Nearly 70,000 fans came out to the opening round of the AMA/Camel
Supercross Series at Anaheim Stadium and winner Rick Johnson, in
his new JT Racing gear, was pictured on the cover. Johnny O'Mara was
leading Johnson in the main event when his Suzuki's steering stem snapped
in half on the 11th lap; Jeff Matiasevich won the 125cc class… Chuck
Miller won the Winter Classic, which
was the opening round of the AMA
National Hare & Hound Series at
Lucerne Valley, California.
