P106 50 Years Ago FEBRUARY 11, 1969 LOOKING BACK We attended Honda's launch of its 1969 models at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas. We revealed the all-new Honda 100cc four-stroke motocrosser on the cover. We said it was destined to become Honda's biggest seller. Honda's new 750cc Four street bike came with a $1400 price tag… We covered the Groundshakers M.C. Hare Scrambles near Las Vegas. The winner? Casey Folks… The Moose Run desert race in Randsburg, California, was cut short due to the threat of flash floods; Dennis Torgerson was declared the winner. Our cover story 40 years ago was our preview of the 1979 AMA Grand National Championship/Winston Pro Series… Jimmy Weinert won a sandy Oakland Supercross with a rear paddle tire that he bought at a local motorcycle shop. Weinert said: "Well, it [the tire] didn't help much at all, but it sure psyched-out the competition." The AMA quickly banned the use of paddle tires in motocross, because the roost was too dangerous. Weinert also wore a padded neck brace that race because of a previous injury. 40 Years Ago FEBRUARY 7, 1979 (Left) Casey Folks gets his card checked en route to victory at the Groundshakers' Hare Scrambles near Las Vegas 50 years ago. (Right) A historical moment in supercross/ motocross took place 40 years ago when Jimmy Weinert won the Oakland Supercross using a paddle tire.
