VOL. 56 ISSUE 3 JANUARY 22, 2019 P73
J
ustin Seeds (Purvines
Racing Yamaha) fired the
first shot of the new era as
what used to be known as the
AMA District 37 Big 6 Grand
Prix Series officially kicked off
under its new title: the FMF AMA
Grand Prix National Champion-
ship Series.
For the first hour of the
weekend's 90-minute feature
race, defending series cham-
pion Trevor Stewart (Johnny
Campbell Racing/Honda) set a
torrid pace, with Seeds several
seconds behind at the always
popular Adelanto GP, hosted by
the So Cal Motorcycle Club at
Adelanto Stadium.
But the cagey Seeds had
been studying his rival and when
he saw an opening with less
than 30 minutes to go, he imme-
diately took it, putting his FMF/
Precision Concepts/O'Neal
Racing-sponsored YZ450F into
the lead.
From there, Maxxis/Pro
Circuit/Fly Racing CRF450RX-
mounted Stewart did all he could
to retaliate, but there was no
denying Seeds a winning debut
for his new team, though the
margin between them was just
one second.
Having won Saturday's
45-minute combined Heavy-
weight/Lightweight race to
gauge pace, Seeds had nothing
but praise for Stewart. "I've got
to give it up to Trevor," he said.
"The kid freaking was ripping!
Honestly, I don't know how I
stayed in front of him. I think he
kind of checked up a little bit,
was kind of saving some energy
for a last-lap sprint. When we hit
that last lap, I was like, 'Oh boy,
here we go.'
"I could just hear him behind
me, lappers were getting in the
way—I'm like, 'Well, I'm either go-
ing to win this thing or I'm going
to crash!' and I came out on top.
Round one of the new GP
Nationals couldn't have gone
better for Justin Seeds. In
his first national for his new
Purvines Racing team, he won
two races at Adelanto.
