VOL. 56 ISSUE 3 JANUARY 22, 2019 P49
CHAMPIONSHIP
BARCIA DOWN
Round-one winner Justin Barcia
(Monster Energy Yamaha) came from
behind in the first main event for sev-
enth, but improved in the second main
to snatch third place, pretty close to
the two leading KTMs. But in the final
main event, while trying to work his
way up into the top 10, he went down
spectacularly in a rhythm section and
was knocked unconscious and carted
off the track by the Alpinestars Medi-
cal crew. He ended up 10th overall at
A2 and still sits fourth in points, just
seven points out of the lead, but his
status for Oakland is unknown.
MUSQUIN'S KNEE
Marvin Musquin has been fighting a
knee injury all season after hurting it in
the off-season. He's had to adjust his
riding style a little bit for his knee, but
mainly it's the pain that bothers him,
and that can get worse later in the
night. But at Anaheim 2, he seemed
to manage the pain pretty well overall,
closely competing with his team-
mate Cooper Webb in the final two
main events of the night, despite not
being able to ride that much during
the week. "I didn't do much on the off-
season, with my knee, but it means a
lot to be on the podium and to be able
to fight for the wins, moto wins right
now," Musquin said. "Thanks to the
people that believe in me. It's only
the beginning. It's a long series."
UP-AND-DOWN FOR
CHAD REED
Chad Reed (JGR/Yoshimura Su-
zuki) had an inconsistent night, but
left Anaheim 2 with a lot of room
to hope. In the first main, Reed
struggled to fight his way into the top
10, and then in the second main, he
ended up sitting it out with bike trou-
bles. In the final main, things seemed
to be sorted out. Reed started the
final main event inside the top five and
then battled it out with Roczen on his
way to fifth place in the race. He also
said it's likely his last time racing at
Anaheim, which means he'll prob-
ably be retiring at the end of the 2019
supercross season.
2ND-GENERATION
INSPIRATION
The crowd at Anaheim 2 was given a
rare treat in the KTM Junior SX Chal-
lenge, when Hudson Deegan (son of
Brian Deegan) and Levi Townley (son
of Ben Townley) battled it out at the
front of the entire three-lap exhibition
race, only for Townley to go off the
track trying to pass Deegan through
the whoops on the last lap, within
sight of the finish line. On the podium,
Deegan showed he's definitely his
dad's son, flexing his muscles after
his victory, while Townley showed
the same thing, emulating his dad,
Ben's calm outward demeanor. Ben
Townley entered Levi into the lottery to
race the KJSC at Anaheim 2 and then
didn't tell Levi he'd won until a couple
weeks prior to A2. The entire Town-

Webb (2) completed
his long-awaited pass
on leader Ken Roczen
on the last lap in
the final turn to win
the first of the three
450SX main-event
races. Webb won two
of the three races.
Hudson Deegan won the KTM Junior
SX Challenge. Here, Hudson and Dad,
Brian, celebrate on the podium.
