LOOKING BACK
Our final issue of 1968 featured a photo from an International-American
MX race. It shows American Steve Scott leading Belgian MX champ
Marcel Wiertz and fellow American Russ Darnell… We covered the
Cowbell Enduro in Upper Lake, California, which drew 1147 entries…
We also covered road racing from Riverside International Raceway,
where Swede Savage took the GP-class win; Savage died four years
later following a crash at the Indianapolis 500 while running in second
place… We ran an interview with Hell's Angels' founding member Sonny
Barger… Dave Aldana and Gary Jones were some of the big winners
at Perris Raceway TT scrambles.
Our year-end wrap-up issue featured Bob Hannah, Kenny Roberts,
Brad Lackey and Jay Springsteen on the cover 40 years ago… Louis
McKey, aka Phantom Duck of the Desert, was voted Cycle News/
West Rider of the Year… We ran a feature on the ins and outs of riding a
championship enduro… We announced the sequel to the movie On Any
Sunday was officially in the works. On Any Sunday II was set to make
its debut Easter, 1980.
