LOOKING BACK
The Dirt Diggers Hopetown Grand Prix was featured on the cover of Cycle
News 50 years ago. The main image shows Dusty Coppage (36) and
Dick Miller battling it out in the Open Amateur/Expert class, while Preston
Petty and Brian Wade were pictured in the inset. It was the 10
th
annual
running of the event, which saw 850 racers take to the track… Some
of the top European motocrossers came to the U.S. for a 6-week MX
series, starting in Pepperell, Massachusetts. Joel Robert won the 500cc
International class and Bengt Aberg the 250cc International class.
Gaylon Moiser was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years
ago for winning the final round of the AMA/Toyota Supercross Series at
Anaheim Stadium. Bob Hannah was second but took the championship
title… Larry Roeseler and Jack Johnson teamed up and won the
SCORE Baja 1000 on a Husqvarna. Their winning margin was more than
an hour… Brian Myerscough, George Holland, Erik Kehoe, Jeff
Ward, and Bob Elliott were just some of the top riders of the week on
the local MX scene in Southern California.
