WORCS race.
"I have a lot of confidence
right now," he said. "Some things
changed about a month ago and
I think I got some weight off my
shoulders or I have something to
prove, and I want to show these
guys I can actually do it."
In fact, Seeds (Maxima/AME
Grips/Fast House KX450F) led
the first couple laps before he
started tightening up. "I was like,
'I've got to back off a little bit'
and [Bell] got by and Trevor and
Dalton [Shirey] got by."
Shirey (Rockstar Energy
Husqvarna) hit a downed rider
shortly after, crashing badly
enough himself to call it a day.
Eric Yorba (FMF/Maxxis/RPM
Racing KTM) moved into fourth
to stay after Shirey crashed out.
Like Bell, he had a late flight to
catch for Chile where he'll be
a member of Mexico's World
Trophy team.
Derek Kelley (Slam Life Rac-
ing/Monster Energy Honda)
equaled his season best to date
in finishing fifth, while Blayne
Thompson (Chaparral Motor-
sports/Precision Concepts
Kawasaki) claimed sixth. Thomp-
son's teammate Clay Hengeveld
took the WCGP Pro II victory at
seventh overall, good enough to
wrap up the class championship
for the year.
WCGP Pro II riders rounded
out the top 10 with Mitch Ander-
son (CST KTM) eighth overall
followed by Austin Serpa (FMF/
Maxxis/RPM Racing KTM) and
(JCR Honda) Preston Campbell.
The weekend took on a
somber tone after the passing of
multi-time D-37 class champion
and longtime Checkers Motor-
cycle Club member Steve Kirk II
who apparently succumbed to a
heart attack in Saturday's Mag-
num-class race moments after
passing D-37 President Brian
Nasif late in that race. Nasif
reported that Kirk let out a "ya-
hoo" after making the pass. The
remainder of Saturday's races
were moved to a modified Sun-
day program. He was preceded
in death by his son Steven Kirk
III and is survived by wife Tamara
and daughter Kaitlyn.
The best race of the week-
end may have been early in
the combined Mini/Women/
Masters/Legends/Vintage race
between Connor Eddy and
Mikayla Nielsen. After trading
the lead several times, Eddy
prevailed, taking both overall and
Mini Intermediate honors ahead
of Nielsen. Eddy and Clayton
Roberts staged a repeat on
Sunday in the combined Super
Mini/Senior Girls/85cc contest,
Eddy again putting the race away
at the end.
