LOOKING BACK
Speedway racing from Whiteman Speedway in Pacoima, California, was
featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. One of the racers
shown was World Speedway Champion Ivan Mauger who taught the
American racers a thing or two about going fast in circles… We wrote
about Gary Nixon's path to the Grand National Championship crown…
We covered hillclimbing from Mineral Wells, Texas… Phil Bowers
took the checkered flag just ahead of Al Baker to win the 100-Mile
Championship Hare & Hound in Red Rock Canyon in the Mojave Desert.
Team Honda's Don Sanford was pictured on the cover of Cycle News
40 years ago at the Cowbell National Enduro in Bellingham, Washington.
Sanford was the overall winner ahead of Mike Hannon and Dick
Burleson… Cycle News was on hand at the WERA Grand National Finals
at College Station, Texas, where Mike Baldwin came away with the win…
Rex Staten was the big winner at the Trans-AMA MX in Lake Whitney,
Texas, but Bob Hannah clinched the championship… Bruce Penhall
won the Ascot National Long Track Speedway Championships.
