LOOKING BACK
Cycle News went to Willow Springs International Raceway to cover the
5th Annual ACA USGP road races. The racing action was featured on the
cover 50 years ago. Some of the day's winners included Jerry Green,
Dave Damron and George Kerker… We covered the Check Case Hare
& Hound, and the overall winner was Norton-mounted Mike Patrick…
We also had coverage of the SoCal M.C. AMA/D-37 Championship won
by Yamaha rider Phil Bowers… Keith Mashburn was still tearing it up at
Ascot Park short track racing.
We featured a couple of riding impressions in Cycle News 40 years ago.
One of them was the 580cc CCM motocrosser, which was pictured in
action on the cover… Yamaha's Bob Hannah won round five of the Trans-
AMA MX Series in St. Peters, Florida. Honda's Marty Tripes, however,
made Hannah work for it… We covered road racing from England's
Mallory Park. Barry Sheene took the win; Kenny Roberts was third…
We also covered the first AGV World Team Cup road race at Imola. Team
USA took the win.
