We recognized road racing's new champions Ben Bostrom, Carl Fogarty
and Mick Doohan on the cover of Cycle News 20 years ago. Bostrom
won the AMA Superbike National title, Fogarty the World Superbike title
and Doohan the 500cc World Championship… Steve Morehead nabbed
his first win of the year at the Las Vegas Half Mile… Led by Stefan Everts,
Team Belgium (Marnicq Bervoets and Patrick Caps) won the MX des
Nations at a rain-soaked Foxhills track in England. The U.S. Team, made
up of Ricky Carmichael, Doug Henry and John Dowd, placed fifth… Ty
Davis clinched the AMA National Hare & Hound title in Idaho.
Doug Polen won the AMA Camel Pro/Superbike Series at Sears Point but
Bubba Shobert was all smiles, too, after wrapping up the AMA National
Superbike Championship, which had its last round at Sears Point; John
Kocinski won the AMA/Castrol 250cc Grand Prix Championship. Pro
Twins Grand Prix winner Dale Quarterley had already clinched Pro Twins
title... Local boy Kevin Bennett won the Little Rhody National Enduro
over Jack Lafferty Jr. and Randy Hawkins…. Larry Roeseler won the
Peppermill Mesquite Grand Prix… We covered the Cologne Motorcycle
Show. Some of the most talked about bikes were the BMW K1, Ducati
Paso 906, and Maico's return
with its new motocross and
enduro bikes… We interviewed
speedway racer Dubb Ferrell.
