Thornburg thrashes Boyd's Creek Motocross SEVIERVILLE, TN, NOV . 5 The Tennessee Sta te Championship Series provided exce llent racing at Boyd 's Creek Motocross though most of the class ti tles had' already been sett led. Pee Wee clas s racing ha d riva ls Todd Tho rn burg , Rusty Dockery , Damian Headrick and Robert Smith battling lor cham p io nship points. Thornburg took the lirst mo to . holeshot and led until th e checkered flag bu t had to light pressure from Dockery the whole wa y. Fu rth er back Sm ith and Headrick Iougtn for third wit h Smith eventually capturing the position. In th e fina l mo to Dockery SIO Ie the holesho t and led for ha lf the race but eventually was overtaken by T horn burg, w ho went on to win the mota. Dockery had to sett le (or second. Headrick cro wded Smith unde r the checkered flag 10 ta ke thi rd as Smith slid dow n but was able to recover [or fo urth. Dav id Spoon ro unded o ut the top five. Over 30 class racing provided some of th e best action of the day as David Farris came fro m a th ird-pl ace start 10 ta ke the lead in the first mo ta o nly a few tu rns from the start. Ro n Nelson wen t wide to try to pass ho lesborta ker Cli ff Dockery on a n off-ca mber sweeper, lea ving the door wide open [or Farris, wh o made th e pass a nd then wen t o n to take the checkered n a g wi th some pressure from Dockery unt il about midway in the moto. Nelson and Dockery battled until the final la p wh en Nelson made a desperatio n pass throug h the whoo ps to tak e over seco nd . In the second moto Doc kery again got the early lead on his Yam ah a but had Farris in immediate tow . Farris made the same pass as in the first motoand tri ed to p ull away . Nelson powered his Honda into second as Dockery fell off the leader 's pac e. Despite Nelso n's efforts , he was unab le to pass Farris at th e fin ish . Dockery held o nto third with Nei l Ca pps charging hard through the pac k to ta ke fourth. Maniscalchi motors to Glen Helen MX By David Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, NOV . 19Mike Mani scalehi put it a ll tog eth er to tak e a hotly-con tested Open Novic e class win a t Don Brown 's G len Helen Race faci lity. In mot a o ne Honda-mounted Gr eg Atkinson and Travis Mu llins went side by side through the up hi ll ch ica ne and o ver the first turn jump and almost co ll ided. This pushed Atkinso n to the outside in th e [ra nt of Maniscalchi. Michael Rochester took ad van tag e of a clear inside lin e to pow er into second as the pack stormed up the hill. Maniscalehi lost another positio n to Gr eg Keirn befo re recoveri ng [rom his near miss wi th Atkinson . Mu lli ns put a pass on Rochester (or second the n new by Atkinson a nd int o the lead. Roc hester held off Maniscalehi fo r [our laps befor e ra iling victim to th e ATK rid er. O n the last lap Maniscalehi closed th e gap on Mu lli ns, but time ran o ut before he co u ld mak e a cha rge for th e lead and Mu llins took the firs t mot a win . Atkinson . Rochester and Charli e Strong rounded out the top five slots . Roch ester timed the gate precisely a t the right moment to nai l the hol eshot at the sta rt of malo two. Beh ind him Strong was being chased by Maniscalchi, J im Alexander a nd the rest of the pack. Mu llins suffered a mid-pack start, bu t pi cked up positions qu ickly. At th e ha lf way point, th e o rder was Ro chester, Manisca lchi, Strong and Mullins. Rochester bega n to show signs of fatigu e and Maniscalchi took adva ntage to go into th e lead. Mu lli ns put a pass on Strong a t th e sam e ti me a nd imm ed iat ely bega n to pressur e Roch ester. On the last lap, Mu llins powered into second only to have the [ran t end wash out in a co rner. Befor e he co uld remount Rochester, Keirn a nd Strong had slipped back by. Privette prevails at Montrose MX Park By Hurley & Dot Short RAEFO RD , NC, NOV . 19 Racers cam e [ro m as far away as Marylan d and New York Sta te to run in the final race of th e NAME Fa ll MX Series at Montrose MX Park. In th e first rnot o of the Plu s 25 cla ss, R. Van Bortel grabbed the ho leshot, but Mike Privet te quickly too k the lead when Van Bortel went down. Privette was followed closely by Keith Riven bar k, Tony Summey and joe No rder at first, but pulled ' out to a hea lthy lead . At the finis h , it was Privette, Rivenbark , Nor der, Ron ald Dobbs and Van Bor tel. . Priveue pulled the ho leshot in the second mot o. This mo to was much like the first with Privette domina ting. Van Bortel and No rder sta yed close to him as Ri ven bark moved in to fourth , th en u p to second. At the checkered flag , it was P rivette. Van Bartel. Rivenbar k. Norder and Dobbs. In th e first mota of the 125cc Novice class . john Sharpe shot ou t to take the holesh o t, fol lowed by Sam Mitc h ner , Shan no n Stewa rt , Kevin Simpson and R ichard H ester. Hester moved into second and Daniel Morriso n into thi rd . At the checkered nag it was Hester, rid ing for Ho nda of Win sto n-Sa lem , followed by Sharpe, Simpson , Morriso n and Kenny Cu rran. . Although Mi tch ner took the ho leshot in the second mala, Hester soo n too k over the lead Io llo wed by Sharp e, Patrick Gree r and Morrison. Hester held on for the win with G reen seco nd , follow ed by Morrison, Sharpe a nd Rich ard Ibison. Mike Andrews too k the hol esho t in the first 125cc P ro class moto with j im Neese, Bill y Silvarole and Sha ne Kennedy in close pursu it. Silvarole moved u p to second,dropp ing Neese back to third. Andrews, riding Cor Maxim a Andrews , too k the checkered [lag, foll o wed by Si lvarole, Neese, Les Walston and Shane Kennedy. Darren dominates Dirty Dog Enduro By Paul Nielsen BELLINGHAM, WA, NOV . 26 Darren wi lf iams, sponsored by Marriott Ho nda and Stealy Pr od ucts, rode his CR2 50 H on da to the overa ll and AA class win at the Dirty Dog Enduro. hosted by the Mt. Baker Motorcycle Club. The end uro was so named because of trickery sometimes inserted into the event , such as putting in a chec k po in t wit hin two mi les of th e last one. or having people standing along the trai l appearing to be running a check but not. The Bell ingh a m ar ea had just ex!?"rienced a Ilood. and with over 10 i nches of ram falling' in November, th e trai ls were soaked with numero us mud bogs and deep water hol es. Gas tan k deep ruts soon developed. At check four , j ohn Moody had the edge, droppi ng ni ne po in ts at check three. and zeroed check five, while Moody dropped on e, bri ngi ng them even. Also in the hunt was Tom Meyers and Al Fetterly with an l l-point loss, and Terry Bennett with 12. At check seven Will iams and Moody were even, both dropping 14; Bennett lost 18 and Fetterly 19. Williams dropped five at check eight, while Moody dropped seven . Willi ams wen t o n to wi n the event wi th a 22 total point loss. Moody got lost be tween the last two checks and suffered a tota l 42 point loss. Bennett went on to wi n the 200cc A class with a 36-poi nt loss. while Tom Meyers took the 250cc A class with a 35'point loss. Mo re than 60 riders started the enduro , only 25 finished.
