LOOKING BACK
Fifty years ago, Cycle News had coverage of both
the Sedalia 15-Mile National and San Jose Mile,
and San Jose winner Bart Markel, on his number-4
Harley-Davidson, was pictured on the front page.
Fred Nix piloted his Harley-Davidson to the win at
Sedalia… We also covered all the motocross racing
action from Carlsbad and the man of the week was
Gary Bailey who won the 500cc Sr. class, which
included Lars Larsson, the Swede who was ranked
number nine in the world at the time.
Road racing was about to come to Laguna Seca and we gave our
readers a preview of the big weekend… We had full race coverage of the
AMA Grand National Championship/Camel Pro Series road races from
Loudon, where Dale Singleton came away with the big win… Cycle
News also covered the SCORE B.F.G. Off-Road World Championships
at Riverside Raceway. Charles Welk was the surprise winner…
Motocrosser Larry Wosick was dominating the racing scene in Northern
California… We interviewed MXer Darrel Shultz.
