LOOKING BACK
Hillclimbing was featured on the cover of
Cycle News 50 years ago. We covered the
Muskegon National Championship Hillclimb
that attracted an estimated 10,000 fans and a
couple hundred of competitors, all vying for a
piece of the $4000 purse. Earl Bowlby took
home most of it by getting farther up the hill
than anyone else. His 320-foot ride netted the
Ohioan $1000… We covered the Nevada State
Championship Hare Scrambles where Mike
Patrick took the win… Evel Knievel received
an honorary lifetime membership with the Salt
Lake Motorcycle Club.
Mike Baldwin was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years
ago for winning the CRC Cycle Jam at Pocono International Raceway,
round 20 of the AMA GNC/Camel Pro Series… The final round of the
AMA/Mr. PiBB 125/500cc National Championship MX Series was held
in St. Joseph, Missouri, where Broc Glover wrapped up the 125cc
title. Rex Staten nabbed his first-ever national win in the 500cc class;
Rick Burgett had already clinched the 500cc title… We interviewed
motocrosser Mark Barnett.
