LOOKING BACK
The Ascot 50-lap National was featured on the
cover of Cycle News 50 years, as was the 10-
Mile National from Santa Rosa, California. Skip
Van Leeuwen scored a wire-to-wire win at the
Ascot race, and Freddie Nix was the number-
one man in Santa Rosa… Motorcyclists
gathered in Lake Elsinore, California, for
the Pacific Coasters Motorcycle Club's 3rd
Annual Mickey Mouse Tour. More than 300
riders took part… Don McCarley was the
Expert-class winner at the Sunday MX races at
Miramar, California.
We pictured our latest test bike on the cover of Cycle News 40 years
ago. It was Yamaha's slick little IT175E enduro… Hank Scott was
on a roll after winning his second mile within nine days, his latest
victory coming at the DuQuoin Mile… We covered the 250cc USGP
at Unadilla and Marty Tripes came away with the overall via 2-2 moto
scores. Jimmy Ellis and Bob Hannah were the moto winners; the top
European was Germany Hans Maisch… Bernie Schreiber won the
World Trials round in Pinerolo, Italy.
