P100 50 Years Ago AUGUST 6, 1968 LOOKING BACK Our featured cover story 50 years ago was the 20-Mile AMA National at Portland Meadows. A photo of Fred Nix way out in front of the pack was featured, along with top amateur racers Tom Rockwood, Bill Cody, Jim Rice and Mark Brelsford… We covered the TT races at Mesa Speedway in San Diego. One of the big winners was Don Emde aboard his twin- exhaust Suzuki… We tested the 360cc CZ motocrosser, saying that riding it "will be an experience that you will never forget; in fact, it'll probably spoil you." All things Sears Point was the theme for the cover 40 years ago. The Northern California facility hosted the Sonoma Motorcycle Classic, a round of the AMA Camel Pro Series. It was here that Mike Baldwin recorded his first ever Grand National victory; Don Emde won the 250cc Expert class… Rick Burgett (500cc) and Broc Glover (125cc) shared the overall wins at the AMA National MX at Atlanta International Raceway… Brad Lackey won the 500cc MXGP at Farleigh Castle. 40 Years Ago JULY 26, 1978 (Left) Steve Morehead celebrates winning the Hagerstown Half Mile 30 years ago. (Right) Davey Durelle won the Pikes Peak Hillclimb for the third time.
