Newkirk held off fellow New Yorker J ohn Resso 'in a race long bail ie for what ap pear ed to be seco nd unt il ' Landes' Wood- Rotax tied up . Ano ther New Yorker, Ro bert Weiss, came from last to first to win the ProAm main , .A lar ge field 01 10 Pro-Am and 57 Jun ior class riders was divided into scra tch heats. From the scrat ch heats . fou r Pro-Am heats were arra nged, Ken McCo nn ell , J oel Barro w, Weiss and Mike Hacker were th e win ners. Six Ju nio r heat s fell to "J a mes H art , Tom Dan iele, Vic McAnall y, Pat Behrl e, Resso a nd Brent Armbru ster. The Pro-Am sern is were crunch time as o n ly the to p lo ur of the three 12man semis wou ld move to the main . Weiss gav e a preview of wha t was to come as he moved lrom deep in the pac k to pass Mike H acker and ru n away with the first semi. Cha rles Buchan a n slipped by J oel Barrow to tak e sem i two. After a restart, Wes Beckm an j um ped o u t to a big lead in th e last semi and eas ily led T im Myers hom e. With starts bein g very cri tica l, the Juniors were all trigger happy. T he pole -sitt ers in all th ree semis - J a mes H art , Brent Armbruster and Vic McAnall y - were all sent to th e pe na lty line fo r jumpin g the lig ht. In the first sem i, Newki rk came o n to win with second go ing to La ndes after he go t by T odd Sha rp less. Hart had wor ked his way into a q ua lifyi ng pos itio n o nly to lose it on the last lap to Pat Behrle, wh o had also come from the penalt y line. Besso used the low lin e to get around Robert Miller, wh o was cl ipping hay bal es all night, in the seco nd sem i. Mill er held on to second o ver Scott Barrell andArmbrus ter. J ay Skidmo re took fu ll ad vantage of fo ur of th e front row starte rs bein g sent to the pena lty line and blasted to a semi three win . Kevin Varnes ra n second wit h Geor ge Garvis movin g from ro w three to th ird over fellow Iow an Kent Lo ng cor . _ Cha rles Buchanan ju mped into the lead of the Pro-Am mai n with Chad Groescup, Tim Myers and Joel Barrow hot on h is heels. Pole-sitter Weiss was ba nge d off the start and found himsel f in las t p lace , but he was qu ick ly ma king up ground. Shawn Clark and Mik e Hacker fell sepa ra tely, but were up quick ly a nd the an io n contin ued non -stop. By the halfway point of the 12-la p race, Weiss was in seco nd and closin g o n Buchanan . Groescu p an d Barrow were lig htin g over third and Michael Warner moved up to fifth . Weiss mad e sh ort work of Buchanan a nd was hom e free. C roescup hel d off Barrow for third. The 15-lap J unior main was a very exciting and strange race wi th just about anyt hi ng that could happen, happeni ng . Newk ir k shot into the lead off , the start wit h Skidmore, Resso, Lo ngcor, Sharpless and Varnes close beh in d. La ndes was recovering from a slo w start and using a low lin e to q u ickly move into the lead. Newkirk, Resso , Skidmore and Longcor were close ly grouped beh ind. Just pas t th e' halfway poi n t Longco r's H o nda b lew o ut o f co ntrol, enteri ng turn o ne. He blasted into Skidmo re, sending both riders ou t of the race. Land es, in th e meanti me, had developed a comforta ble lead. Newkirk and Resso worked on o ne anot he r cont in ua lly. Suddenly, as La ndes too k the whi te flag, his Wood- Rotax sputtered and coas ted to a sto p in turn o ne. " It dropped a valve abo u t two laps from the en d. T he n it just quit," said a dejected Landes. Wi th so man y riders falling, gett ing up 'a nd restarting, and being lapped, La ndes still ende d up in sevent h posi lio n. Newkirk and Resso cont inued to batt le bu t now it was for first and Newk irk gal to the lin e first. " I tho ugh t I won, bu t we were lapping a rider a t the same lim e he (La ndes) stopped, so I wasn 't sure . It 's a win , that's wha t counts," sai d an elat ed Newkir k, CN T hough they were arch rivals on, opposing teams back in 1989, Wayne Rainey and Eddie Lawson had pre' l::. vious ly stood side by side in Marlboro ...c:: colors. That was in 1984, when Law.., son was the team leader for T eam ~ Marl boro Agosti ni Yam ah a and Rainey was in his first season of Grand Pri x racing contes ting th e 250cc World Champ ionsh ip as par t of Team Marlboro Roberts. In 1988, Wayne Rain ey fini sh ed third in the 500cc World Champ ionsh ip. The following year he ��had ,moved up to second in the title chase, and final ly, in 1990, Wayne Rainey won a well-deserved 500cc World Championship: This painting of Wayn e Rainey, wh ich was completed at th e arti st' s st udio in Seattle over the course of five days, depicts his aggressive riding style. RAYMOND ROCHE Currently, Raymond Roche is riding for th e Ducati World Supe rbike Team headed by Mar co Lucchinelli. The Frenchman has extensive experience in 500cc Grand Prix racing, after spe nding many yea rs with factory teams including the Marlbo ro Yamaha, Rothmans Honda, and Cagiva . Riding the Ducati 888, he clinched th e 1990 World Supe rbike Cha mpion"ship. T he original painting was conceived at the U.S. round of the Superbike Worl d Ch ampionships in 1990 at Bra inerd, Minn esota, and was signed by Raymond Roche.
