Although pl easant S 40 weather greeted a large cro wd o n Su nday a ftern oo n, rider turnou t was rather low . Onl y 23 Experts sig ned up , a nd th e small turnout o f Jun ior' and Pro-Am rid er s sa w th ose classes com bined into o ne 12-rider main even t. Texan Terry Poovey prov ed to be the fastest of th e riders who took q uali fying laps, a nd he earned $250 for h is 18.563 seco nd la p time. Morehead was seco n d fas test, posting a 18.668. Larry Pegram had th e fastest cl u tch hand at th e stan of th e first heat and led Poovey a nd Eri k Gray bea l th ro ugh turn one. Pegram bobbled exiting turn four , and th at was a ll th e vetera n Poovev nee ded to stea l th e lead and score i he wi n. Pegram held o n for seco nd a hea d o f Graybeal. Mor ehead stole th e holeshot a nd ran away wi th th e win in heat two. Brian T illiso n , Ran d v T ex ter a nd Dav e Durell e battl ed 'th ro ug ho u t th e race . and fin ish ed in that order. On la p IWO, Rogers got 100 low in turn o ne a nd hi s front wh eel slid o u t from under him . Rogers crashed into th e hay ba les a nd th e red flag WllS brought ou t. Roger s wa s unhurt a nd mad e th e restart , bUI was no t a factor in th e race . Mor eh ead took ad vant age of th e restart and led Davi s, Poov ey and Peg ra m o ff th e lin e. Alt hough the race was close a nd exciring, th ere were n o lead c ha nges. Mor eh ead crossed the finish line in ch es a head of Dav is .a nd Poovey. " My strategy wa s to ge t int o th e co rner har d, gat her it up in th e middle a nd ge t a clean sho t.co m ing o ut," sa id a happy Moreh ead. " If he wo uld have mad e a mistak e I coul d' ve go tten underneath him , bu t he wo u ld pull me so much ," sai d Dav is.
