HERLINGS, JONASS TOP MATTERLEY BASIN MXGP I t was another KTM benefit race at round nine of the 2018 Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship at Great Britain's Matterley Basin Circuit, May 3. The orange brand went 1-2 in both the MXGP and MX2 classes. In MXGP, Red Bull KTM team- mates Jeffrey Herlings and Anto- nio Cairoli again went at it for the moto and GP overall victories. Both times, Cairoli was leading late in the race when Herlings attacked. In the first moto, Herlings came up through the pack and started challenging the defending champ with a couple laps to go. The teammates went back and forth a couple of times, the final time leaving Cai- roli on the ground when the two slammed into each other exiting a turn. Cairoli was no match for the larger-framed Herlings who stayed upright and went on to win the race. Cairoli quickly got up and salvaged second place ahead of former champ Tim Gajser (Honda HRC), Clement Desalle (Monster Energy Kawa- saki) and Romain Febvre (Mon- ster Energy Yamaha). Race two was another heart- breaker for Cairoli who led every lap except the all-important last lap, which is when Herlings, who chased in second from lap one, attacked and successfully com- pleted a pass on Cairoli and took the checkered flag 1.1 seconds ahead of the Italian moments later. The two KTMs were well clear of the next bike ridden by Febvre in third place. Febvre crossed IN THE WIND P32 Jeffrey Herlings ran down his teammate and defending MXGP champ Antonio Cairoli in both motos to take the overall win at Matterley Basin. PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAY ARCHER
