LOOKING BACK
We focused on the simple and most fun
aspect of motorcycling—trail riding.
To illustrate this, we featured "a typical"
weekend of trail-riding campers in front of
the cliffs at Red Rock Canyon in California.
Cycle News staffers participated on a trail-
ride poker run hosted by the Ridge Riders
Trail Club… We covered the Cherry Creek
National Hare & Hound in Utah. Triumph
rider Al Rodgers was the overall winner…
Our spotlight rider of the week was
Washington's Emil Ahola, a top-ranked
flat tracker.
This week's issue 40 years ago featured our coverage of the U.S. GP MX
from Carlsbad Raceway and winner Heikki Mikkola was pictured on the
front page… Desert racer John McCown wrote Cycle News informing
us of the sad news that his long time and world famous racing partner, his
16-year-old dog Kookie, had passed away… Jay Springsteen won the
Louisville Half Mile in Kentucky, but the big news was Gary Scott claiming
Springteen's XR Harley and protesting him for using intoxicants; tests were
taking and "Springer's" prize money was withheld.
