VOL. 55 ISSUE 20 MAY 22, 2018 P97 ALL DUNLOP For the first time, due to American Flat Track's concern over tire wear on the abrasive mile oval, Dunlop R10 rear tires were mandatory for the AFT Twin 25-lap race. Other than Cose's flat tire, there did not seem to be a problem with tire wear, but it was a learning experience for all involved. RECORD BREAKER Fifty-seven-year old Ronnie Jones upped his own record as the oldest rider to make an AFT Twins main when he captured the last qualifying spot in the second semi. Jones has posted 10 career AFT Twins victories, the first of which came almost four decades ago and the most recent nearly a quarter- century back. He has qualified for AFT Twins Main Events across five different decades the '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000s and 2010s. Jones ended the night with a 14th- place finish. DIVERSE MAIN While the top-10 positions in the AFT Twins main were dominated by the Indian Scout FTR750, there were six brands of motorcycles represented in the main. There were three Yamaha FZ-07s, three Kawasaki Ninja 650s, two Harley-David- son XG750Rs and one Ducati Monster 821 and one KTM LC8 950. Five brands were in the AFT Singles: five Yamaha YZ450Fs, 10 Honda CRF450R's and one KTM 450 SX-F, one Husqvarna FC 450 and one Kawasaki KX450F. SIX RACES, SIX DIFFERENT WINNERS The AFT Singles class has featured six winners in six races and the consistency of Brandon Price and Dan Bromley have moved them to first and second in the points with 105 and 101, respectively. Ryan Wells is in third with 84. The AFT Twins class is quite the opposite—it's been all Jared Mees so far, as he has Briefly... (Above) Bryan Smith (right), broken leg and all, managed to join Mees and Coolbeth on the Twins podium. (Left) Coolbeth (2) made a run on Mees at the end but couldn't keep Mees from chalking up his fifth win. (Below) Chad Cose (49) was an early leader but slipped back later in the race.
