LOOKING BACK
Bart Markel took center stage 50
years ago. He was pictured on the front
page sliding his Harley-Davidson to
victory at the Virginia 13-Mile National
Championship in Richmond… J.N.
Roberts was one of the winners at
Carlsbad motocross. He topped the
500cc class, while Gary Conrad topped
the 250cc class… We covered Larry
Bergquist's win at the Simi Valley Hare
Scrambles, played out in California City…
In Richmond, California, at the Ramblers
M.C.'s Scrambles, Brad Lackey was the
top 200cc Novice-class rider.
Our coverage from the Scottish Six Days was featured on the cover 40
years ago. It was a picture of American Debbie Evans making her way
up the famous pipeline section of the event. Martin Lampkin was the
overall winner… We covered the New Orleans Supercross held in the
Superdome, where Bob Hannah recorded his sixth straight SX win,
22nd of the racing season… Brad Lackey, once again, took second
place to Heikki Mikkola in the 500cc World Championship MX in
Denmark… Kenny Roberts won the Nogaro 500cc GP.
