IN THE WIND P36 GROEMM STARS AT SAHARA SAND HARE SCRAMBLES R ound five of the SRT/AMA East Championship Hare Scrambles, hosted by Motorcycle Competition Incorporated (MCI), played out at Sahara Sands in Eagleswood, New Jersey, May 5-6. It was also round three of the ECEA HS Series. Weather conditions couldn't have gotten much better, and more than 630 racers took advantage of it. The club laid out a 12-mile trail for the main event, which featured plenty of sand. This was more of a desert race with 70 percent of the track made up of wide-open whoops and scattered turns. When the green flag dropped, it was SRT Husqvarna's "Wild" Wally Palmer with the holeshot and he would lead the entire first lap. Unfor- tunately for him, on the second lap, he came through scoring in second place and his left side was torn up, the victim of an ap- parent crash. KTM's Jesse Groemm now held the lead, and keeping Groemm and Palmer within sight was Beta's Kyle McDonal. The three battled it out during lap three with less then 30 seconds be- tween them. New England's own Brendan Riordon eventually got in on the action and passed Palmer, who would crash again and then get "run over" by another racer, breaking his bike's subframe. Groemm went on to take the win ahead of McDonal and Riordon. Notable mention goes to Mike Beeler Jr. who finished fifth overall from the A-200 line. In the morning amateur event, Braydon Nolette wowed the crowd on his Husky Super Mini, finishing first overall from the Schoolboy one row. Kenny Held Overall Results 1. Jesse Groemm 2. Smith was involved in a three-rider crash during a semi-final at the Texas Half Mile, April 28. Further evalu- ation revealed a broken fibula in his leg. According to his team, he will be re-evaluated after the next two races to determine his ability to compete at the May 19 Sacra- mento Mile. CN Indian's Bryan Smith is sidelined with a broken leg.
