The Tampa Supercross was our cover story 30 years ago. A photo of
Jeff Ward leading the pack and a photo of Rick Johnson popping
the champagne were featured… The opening round of the World
Championship 500 MX Series took place in Austria and Dave
Thorpe was the big winner… Eric McKenna won the Shasta Dam
GP… Dan Smith and Garth Sweetland teamed up and won the Las
Vegas 300… Factory Harley racers Scott Parker, Jay Springsteen
and Chris Carr tested a perimeter-frame H-D dirt tracker.
We headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for our four-way 600cc
sportbike shootout. The winner? Kawasaki's ZX-6R… In Irving,
Texas, Jeremy McGrath clinched his fifth supercross title with a
second-place finish. The 125cc West title was decided in Texas by a
final-round showdown between John Dowd and David Vuillemin;
Dowd got the holeshot, the win and the title… Las Vegas World Mini
GP winners included Mike Alessi, Davi Millsaps, Shane Bess,
Ivan Tedesco, Andrew Short, Ben Riddle, Branden Jessemen,
Josh Hill and James Stewart.
