ROAD RACE ROUND 2 / APRIL 20-22, 2018 CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS / AUSTIN, TEXAS P74 MOTOAMERICA CHAMPIONSHIP onds a lap faster. From there, the race was all the South African's as he put on a demonstration of wet weather prowess to take an outstand- ing 12.6-second victory, with a delighted Herrin back on the po- dium in his first ride on a super- bike-spec Yamaha for the Attack team in second, and Beaubier coming home third. "I managed to pass Josh [Her- rin] with three laps left," Scholtz said. "I just put my head down and took the victory, which I'm re- ally happy with. It seems that the wet weather is going to become back straight yet running wide, he made the pass stick on lap nine. Beaubier's stint at the front was short lived, as the Californian lost the front of his Yamaha YZF-R1 on lap 10 in the stadium section. He remounted still in third place, a position he would hold to the flag. Meanwhile, Mathew Scholtz (Yamalube/Westby Racing Ya- maha) was charging up the order. The South African was closing in on second place when Beaubier crashed, and by lap 12 was past Herrin, lapping up to three sec- to the lead before the end of the first lap. Herrin, who had completed round one a week prior at Road Atlanta on his street bike Yamaha YZF-R1S after his race transport- er containing his superbike broke down, put his head down and be- gan to pull out an advantage over now second placed Cameron Beaubier (Monster Energy/Yama- lube Yamaha Factory Racing) as the rain continued to pour down. Yet two-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Beaubier was on a charge, and after pass- ing Herrin once at the end of the iii My Own Race: 11 MATHEW SCHOLTZ 1-6 SUPERBIKE "Before the Sunday morning warm-up, we made a few changes that were pretty posi- tive were going to make the bike better, and they definitely did," Scholtz said after race two. "Obviously, our pace wasn't that quick because the track was slightly damp, but I was pretty confident that we had found something. Going into the second race, I knew it probably wasn't going to pan out quite like the first race, but I still kind of thought we could fight for the podium. Same as in the first race, I got a terrible jump off the line, but I was able to make my way past a few guys. And then, we started to have a few problems with the bike, and I ended up fighting with Herrin for a couple of laps. Then, Lewis caught us with two laps to go. All of the riding aids [electronic interven- tion] on the bike completely switched off, and I just really dropped off and finished in sixth place, really far off. So, it's a disappointing end to a brilliant weekend that we had. But, I am really confident that my Yamalube/Westby team is going to work hard to get the bike sorted out for the Virginia round." 1 TONI ELIAS 4-1 SUPERBIKE "Yesterday [race one], I expected a little bit more, especially because the bike was the same as last week where we could fight with Cameron, but yesterday, something was, I didn't feel comfortable… not good grip," Elias said. "So, our main goal was to gain points. But, we know it will be tough. Like Cameron [Beaubier] said, VIR is coming, Road America. It will be good for the MotoAmerica fans. Big fight and we will try to give maximum effort possible." 6 CAMERON BEAUBIER 3-2 SUPERBIKE "I'm really happy to get out of here with two podiums, especially after yesterday's little tip-over," Beaubier said. "I think we're moving in the right direction. Coming into this race, we knew that it was going to be tough. Our bike seems to struggle a little bit here and there [at this track], but we did the best we could with what we had. Now, we're going to go to some tracks where the Yamaha rolls really well—VIR, Road America and some others. I'm really looking forward to it. Hats off to my guys for working so hard and giving me a good bike. And congratulations to both of these guys. I'm ready to go racing at VIR in two weeks."
