LOOKING BACK
(Left) Al Baker
leads Gary Bailey
at Carlsbad
Raceway 50 years
ago. (Below) Mark
Barnett was happy
to take over the
125cc points lead
at the Houston AMA
National MX.
On the cover 50 years ago, we hyped up
the first big-bore MX race soon to be held
at Saddleback Park, and we also had
a photo of a few of the 600 riders who
participated in the annual Buffalo Feed
street ride that took everyone to Calico
Ghost Town… Dan Haaby topped the
San Jose Half Mile… Many motocrossers
were lured to Carlsbad Raceway, hoping
to take home a piece of the cash purse.
Gary Bailey, on a 100cc Hodaka, was
one of those riders.
We featured the "Flying Finn" Heikki Mikkola on the cover of Cycle News
40 years ago after he won the 500cc MX GP opener in Switzerland…
Mark Barnett took the 125cc points lead at the AMA/Mr. PiBB National MX
in Houston; Bob Hannah won the 250cc class again… We covered the
Shamrock's Two-Day ISDT Qualifier in California City, where speedway star
Jim Fishback revealed his off-road prowess by taking the win… Johnny
Cecotto won the Formula 750 World Championship round at Paul Ricard.
