Lions Drag Strip in California opened
up the lanes to everyone and offered a
$900 purse for those with the fastest
two-wheel machines. The Lions Drag
Festival attracted 150 participants and
we covered the whole thing… What
we couldn't squeeze into the previous
week's issue with our Daytona
coverage spilled into this week's
issue… We had a test on the Yamaha
Enduro 250… We covered the
Helvetia Scrambles from Sacramento,
California. Paul Johnson took top
honors in the 250cc Expert class.
We pictured R.C. Carter's work on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago.
Carter was the winner of our Motocross Cat Koloring Kontest… After giving
the U.S. its first win in FIM World Trials a week earlier, Bernie Schreiber
gave us our second victory, this time in Spain… The "Flyin' Freckle," aka
Jeff Ward, was the big winner at the NMA World Mini Grand Prix in Trabuco
Canyon, California… Honda unveiled its 498cc prototype enduro bike,
which was basically a larger version of the XL250S.
