TEN YEARS AGO Truth being str;mger than fiction, Cycle News issue 18 in 1970 featured a small story and a photo introducing a 16:year-old Sachs riding nonhero California motocrosser named Brad Ladey. Lackey, the article said, was back in action following a broken kneecap. The anicle also said, "He has already proven himself to be an ac· complished 125 Senior rider in the Inter-Ams and with help coming from Johnson's Campus Suzuki, Brad should be fantastic to watch." A Daytona preview listed the factory teams: BSA had Mike "The Bike" Hallwood, Dave Aldana and Jim Ilice on their triples; Harley·Davidson had Cal llayborn, Men La_ill, Roger Reiman, Ban Markel and new- comer Mark Brebford on the new Sportster-based XR750s; Honda had Dick Mann and a pair of Europeans on their four cylinder machines; Kawa- saki has 125cc World Road Racing Champ Dave Simmonds and Califor· nian Dave Smith on 500cc two·stroke triples; Suzuki had llon Grant; An BaUlDlUlD, JOOy Nicholu and Jim Odom riding their 500cc two·stroke twins; Triumph had Gary Naon, Gene Romero and rookie Don Castro; and Yamaha, though not entering an "official" team, had Yvon DuHamel, R.alph White, R.on Pierce, Tom Ilocl- wood, Kel Carruthers, Jack Findlay, Dan Huby, Dusty Coppage and Chuck Palmgren on their 550cc two stroke twins. Comparative odds listed Harley at 5-1 to win and Honda at 25-1. Dick Burleson was pictured in a Rick· man Metisse ad for having been named the AMA Sportsman Motocross Cham· pion for the '69 season, riding one of the four-strokes. The Prospectors M.C. hosted an ISDT Q.ualifier in the Jawbone Canyon/Red Rock/Iron Canyon area of the Mojave desen. No winner was listed at press time, but among those finishing were East German MZ factory rider Werner Salenky, Dave Ekins, Tom Penton, Praton Petty, Al Baker, Mike Pat- rick, Malcolm Smith, Gary Conrad, Claes Nibon and Steve Hurd. Mark Brebford won the $500 Bam Burner short track race in San Fran· cisco's Cow Palace, defeating Butch Corder in the main event and Jim R.ice and Dave Hansen in a special event. In a Hilltoppen M.C. motocross in Sandy, OR, the winner of the 125 and 250cc events was 15'year'0Id Ilick Burgett. In the Master Links D-57 hare scram· bles, Whitey Manino defeated J.N. Roberta for the overall win, while in a Nevada European Scrambles, Mas Switzer was the winner. The American Motocross Team, a non·profit group trying to raise money to send American riden to Europe, had a full page ad urging people to contribute towards their goal of an American World MX Champ.
