Skip Van Leeuwen was pictured flying his Triumph through the air during
the TT Steeplechase at Ascot Park in Gardena, California. Van Leeuwen
was the winner of the 100-lap race… We covered the ACA Moto-Cross in
Castaic, California, which was attended by notable racers Gary Bailey and
Preston Petty, who rode the new twin-port Suzuki to victory in the Senior
class… We showed you Vetter's latest, frame-mounted Phantom/2 fairing
designed to fit most "popular" motorcycle models.
40 Years Ago
March 15, 1978
Marty Tripes, who was pictured on the
cover of Cycle News 40 years ago, was
far enough out in front to rip a classic
cross-up en route to victory at the
Atlanta Supercross… The Chaparrals
M.C. hosted the AMA National Enduro in Red Mountain, California. Honda
rider Mike Hannon came away with the victory… We profiled local off-road
racer Ann Mennell… We interviewed Camel Pro GNC points leader Steve
Eklund… We also interviewed supercross promoter Mike Goodwin.
20 Years Ago March 11, 1998
Larry Ward was pictured on the cover 20 years ago for winning the
Tampa Supercross. It was his second career victory, which came eight
years after his first supercross win; Ricky Carmichael won the 125cc
class… Alan Cathcart got the chance to spin laps on Carl Fogarty and
Pier-Francesco Chili's Ducati 996 Superbikes… We interviewed one of
Europe's top off-road racers Paul Edmondson who was about to take on
the Americans in the 1998 GNCC Championship… We tested the 1998
KTM 200 M/XC off-roader.

with Team Lucky Strike Roberts that was planning to contest the upcoming
500cc World Road Racing Championship with riders Randy Mamola and
Mike Baldwin… The AMA National
Championship MX Series got underway
in Gainesville, Florida; Rick Johnson
(250cc) and George Holland (125cc)
came away with the wins.
