We published the new California motorcycle safety bill, which we generally
supported except when it came to the mandatory helmet law… We covered the
Pacific Coast Moto-Cross Championship in Washington State. Larry Lawson
was the big winner in the 10-lap Grand Prix race… We also covered the Colton
Hare & Hound in Oregon, which was held in 20-degree temperatures with the
ground covered in snow and mud. Greeves rider Gib Wright took the win…
Wayne Hosaka won the High Boots M.C. TT Scrambles in El Cajon, California.

Supercross Series was held inside
the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington,
and was our cover story 40 years
ago. Factory Honda rider Jimmy
Ellis came away with the win… We covered the final round of the CMC
Golden State MX Series at Helvetia Park in Sacramento, California. Danny
Turner won the 125cc Championship and Rex Staten the 250 and 500cc
Championships… Don Kudalski, Mickey Kessler and Mark Barnett were
tearing it up in the Florida Winter-AMA MX Series.
20 Years Ago February 25, 1998
We previewed the upcoming Daytona 200 20 years ago, which included
an interview with "Mr. Daytona" Scott Russell and a test of his Yamaha
YZF750 Superbike… We had coverage of the opening round of the AMA/
MBNA Superbike Series from Phoenix International Raceway. Ducati's
Anthony Gobert took the win with Mat Mladin finishing second. Doug
Chandler won the 600cc Supersport class, and Jason Pridmore won
the 750cc Supersport class… Jeremy McGrath won the Indy Supercross;
Ricky Carmichael won the opening round of the 125cc East Series.

The winners of the Seattle Supercross doubleheader—Rick Johnson and
Ron Lechien—were pictured on the cover 30 years ago; Jeff Matiasevich
swept the 125cc class… We featured an interview with Georgia's Billy Liles
who was about to embark on his second full season in the 500cc Motocross
World Championship… We reported that Team Kawasaki's Jeff Ward and Ron
Lechien were experimenting with the new
React, Inc. one-way radio communication
system, which they used at the Seattle
SX. The mechanic could talk to the rider
but not the other way around.
