50 Years Ago February 23, 1968
We covered the very first Houston Astrodome Indoor National Championship
and Gary Nixon was pictured on the cover for taking the win. Also on the cover
was a photo of members of the Arabia Shrine Temple putting on a show at the
Astrodome; the group was the major sponsor of the race. More than 31,000
fans came out and watched… We covered the first Elsinore Grand Prix, which
was considered a replacement for the Catalina Grand Prix. The race was hosted
by the Gripsters Motorcycle Club and won by Steve Scott.

Our feature story 40 years ago discussed
the on-going debate about dirt bike riding
and land closures… We reported that
Roger DeCoster had suffered internal
injuries when he crashed while training
in Belgium and nearly lost his life… Brent Wallingsford and Scot Harden
teamed up to win the Mexicali 300… Rex Staten won the CMC/Suzuki
Golden State MX round at Dunlap Cycle Park near Fresno, California…
Mark Barnett topped the Florida Winter-AMA MX opener in Orlando… We
tested the Kawasaki KX250-A4.

Jeremy McGrath, who was pictured on the cover, won his second
consecutive AMA Supercross Series round for his new Chaparral Yamaha
Team; his latest victory came at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. John
Dowd won the 125cc West class… We previewed the 1998 AMA/MBNA
Superbike National Championship season; we predicted Anthony Gobert
would win it all… Homeboy Brian Garrahan won the opening round of
the AMA Hare Scrambles Championship in Hollister, California… Johnny
Campbell was the big winner at the Adelanto GP.

Jeff Ward made the cover after winning the Houston Supercross. It was
the opening round of the AMA/Coors Supercross Series and Ward's fourth
consecutive win at the Astrodome… Chuck Springsteen won the Indoor Pro
Ice Race final in Muskegon, Michigan, but Bryan Hardin wrapped up the
championship… Dan Smith did it all by himself en route to the Parker 400
victory… We had coverage of the Paris-
Dakar Rally. Eddie Orioli, on an NXR750
Honda, was the overall motorcycle
winner; two riders were paralyzed and
one killed during the race.
