50 Years Ago February 16, 1968
Gary Bailey was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. He was
tearing up the motocross scene in Southern California. His latest success
came at Castaic Moto-Cross on his 360cc Greeves. Mike Runyard and
Steve Hurd were some of the other fast guys on the day… We covered the
Steeplechase Starter at Ascot Park, and some of the big winners were Keith
Mashburn, Skip Van Leewen, Bob Bailey and Alex Chinowski.

Steve Eklund made the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago for being the first
rider ever to win both nights of racing at
the Houston GNC doubleheader. Inside
the Astrodome, Eklund won the TT Friday
night and the short track Saturday night… At the Sacramento Off-Highway
Vehicle Park, Danny "Magoo" Chandler, Darrell Shultz and Pat Richter
were the big winners at the CMC/Suzuki Golden State Series MX… We
tested the Yamaha IT 400E enduro bike… We covered Bob Balentine's
win at the CRC Hare Scrambles in Red Mountain, California.

Our Project Royal Star was proudly pictured on the front page 20 years
ago to accompany our cruiser special issue… We tested the 1998 Honda
Shadow Aero… We also tested the 1998 Suzuki VL1500W Intruder LC…
Jeremy McGrath won the Seattle Supercross. It was his first victory on
the Chaparral/Yamaha Team; David Vuillemin won the 125cc Supercross
West main event… Ty Davis won the opening round of the AMA Hare &
Hound Series in Lucerne Valley, California… We went dual sporting with Lyle
Lovett, Malcolm Smith and Scot Harden.

Rick Johnson was featured on the cover for winning at Anaheim for the first
time, but it was for the opening round of the MTEG Coors Super Crown of
Stadium Motocross… We reported that the San Diego Supercross had just
been canceled and replaced by round two of the MTEG Super Crown of
Stadium MX. The SX promoters' war was heating up… John Kitch, John
Reinhold and Jojo Keller topped
the Florida Winter AMA MX at Croom
Raceway; Bob Hannah clinched the
championship.
