P102 50 Years Ago February 2, 1968 Pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago was road racer Jody Nicholas who returned to the track after serving a couple of years in the Navy. Riding a Don Vesco 650cc BSA, Nicholas won the Open class at Carlsbad Raceway… Preston Petty went home with a first-place trophy after winning the 250cc Expert class at the Hilltoppers M.C.'s TT Scrambles at Perris Raceway in California… We discussed the importance of writing your senators when it comes to preserving our motorcycling rights. 40 Years Ago February 1, 1978 We began our multi-part series: How To Ride Like Hannah… He had full coverage of the second round of the CMC/Suzuki Golden State MX Series from Hangtown and Brad Lackey, Rex Staten and Danny Turner were the big winners… We covered Bob Balentine's win at the CRC Hare Scrambles from California City… We asked the question: Who will win the AMA Grand National Championship Camel Pro Series in 1978?... We reported that Honda was going to field an official National Enduro Team made up of Don Sanford, Mike Hannon and Rick Munyon. 20 Years Ago January 28, 1998 We featured dual shootouts in the latest issue of Cycle News. We compared three of the best Open-class sport bikes, and six of the top 250cc MX bikes. The Yamaha YZF-R1 was the best of the street machines, and the Kawasaki KX250 was crowned king of the MXers… We had an interview with Ben Bostrom… We went to speedway school and learned the tricks of the trade from Billy Hamill… Ezra Lusk won the Houston round of the AMA Supercross, while Jeremy McGrath finished second.
