P92 50 Years Ago January 26, 1968 A drawing of scrambles racer Dan Carlton was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago… In the previous issue, we covered Evel Knievel's big crash at Caesar's Palace and a few days later, he called Cycle News to let everyone know that he was okay and was already planning another jump in Las Vegas during the grand opening of the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino. But he had bigger plans in the future—jumping the Grand Canyon. 40 Years Ago January 25, 1978 We featured an action photo of the Harley-Davidson XLCR 1000 on the cover. We tested the new café racer. We said: "Fun? Yes! Racer? No"… We introduced a new series that was going to run in the next few issues of Cycle News—riding tips by Bob Hannah. We called it: "How To Ride Like The Hurricane"… We interviewed former Penton employees John Penton and Jack Lehto, new managers at the newly formed KTM America. Topics on the table included the future of the Penton brand and KTM. 20 Years Ago January 21, 1998 The opening round of the AMA Supercross Series got underway at the LA Coliseum and the surprise winner was Frenchman Sebastien Tortelli who came out and dominated the race. His plan was to race just the first few rounds of the series before heading back to Europe to do the MXGP series… We covered the FBI (Fred Bramblett Invitational) Trail Ride in Kentucky. You could say it was one of the first true extreme trail rides… Josh Demuth won the AMA PJ1 Arenacross round in the Forth Worth, Texas.
