Subscriber contest winners were featured on the cover, as well as new Grand National Champion Gary Nixon, and a photo of Dan Haaby and Mel Lacher battling it out from Ascot… CN reader Ray Rieger won a brand new 750cc Norton P-11 Scrambler for having the best entry for explaining, in 25 words or less, why he loves riding motorcycles so much… We looked at two new companies trying to resurrect the Indian brand. 40 Years Ago January 11, 1978 Our year-end issue featured on the cover a montage of souvenirs, stickers and motorcycle paraphernalia that the CN staff had accumulated through out the year… We showed you some of the hot new 1978 models from Honda, like the six cylinder, 24-valve CBX1000, claimed to deliver 103 horsepower… In Peru, Roger DeCoster dominated the Motocross de las Americas; top (and only) American was 15-year-old David Bailey in sixth… Bernie Schreiber won the Trial de Espana at Saddleback Park… Larry Roeseler won the Desert Donkey Hare & Hound. 20 Years Ago January 7, 1998 Mick Doohan was our Rider of the Year 20 years ago… We featured interviews with Jeff Emig, John Kocinski, Doug Chandler, Kevin Windham, Mike Lafferty, Johnny Murphree and Ricky Carmichael… Our Time Remembered piece took a look back at former supercross and MX champion Mark Barnett… We also covered the Florida Winter Olympics. In 1997, the big winners were Justin Buckelew (125cc 12-15), Travis Pastrana (125 B), Davi Millsaps (65cc 7-9), Nick Wey (250 A), Ernesto Fonseca (125 A) and Bronze Boot winner James Stewart (85cc 7-11).
