European motocrossers spent the end of the year in sunny California racing
some of the state's biggest races and one of those riders was Belgian Joel
Robert, who was pictured on the cover of Cycle News on his twin-pipe CZ in
Dehesa, California… In Las Vegas, the Nevada Championship TT Scrambles
played out and one of the big winners was BSA-mounted Dewayne Jones in
the Amateur/Expert Open class… We covered the 100-mile Yakima Scrambles
in Washington. Seattle's Ken Habeck was the
winner; Don Pomeroy, Jim and Ron's father,
was one of the check workers.

A photo of a very trick 450 Honda, with its unique dual-shock suspension, was
pictured on the cover 40 years ago to accompany our coverage of the Four-
Stroke National MX from Carlsbad Raceway. Marty Moates was headed to
a sure win until his highly modified Honda let him down. Tommy Croft's luck
wasn't any better. Rod Kenter ended up winning; Dick Mann beat Rolf Tibblin
in the Open Sportsman/Amateur class… The Phantom Duck of the Desert,
aka Louis McKey, led a group of trail riders on the former B-to-V racecourse.

We looked back at one of the most historic moments in American motocross
history when Marty Moates won the 500cc U.S. GP at Carlsbad in 1980. Our
Time Remembered piece featured Moates and his improbable victory… Ezra
Lusk made his Honda debut a memorable one by winning the Tokyo Super-
cross… Buddy Antunez swept the Albany round of the AMA/PJ1 National
Arenacross Series… CN Test Editor Alan Cathcart took a spin on a very old
Harley-Davidson—the H-D Eight-Valve 1000.

The Florida Winter Olympics was our feature story 30 years ago and Brian Swink
and John Kitsch were featured on the cover. Some of the Olympic Champions
were Jeff Matiasevich, Chad Pederson, Butch Smith, Craig Decker and
Greg Rand… Rick Johnson represented Team USA well at the Japan Super-
cross in Tokyo. Johnson led from start to finish; Jeff Ward took second and
Micky Dymond third… We reported that the
environmental group known as "Earth First" took
credit for sabotaging the B-to-V desert race.
