P88 50 Years Ago December 14, 1967 Harry A. Burton was the latest winner of our monthly photo contest. Burton's photo from the Hopetown Grand Prix was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago… We covered the Motorcycle Racers, Inc. Point Fund Presentation and Party at Caesar's Palace in Inglewood, California, where racers like Dan Haaby, Skip Van Leeuwen and Dusty Coppage were honored for their accomplishments on the track during the 1967 flat track season… Willow Springs hosted the fourth U.S. Grand Prix road races. Some of the winners included Dave Damron and Byron Black. 40 Years Ago December 7, 1977 We featured TT, desert and hare scrambles racing on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago… Bob Balentine was the big winner at the San Gabriel Valley M.C. AMA Hare & Hound in Lucerne Valley, California… We covered the Richmond Rambler's International World Championship Mini Bike GP. Some of those who competed included Rick Burgett, Rich Eierstedt and Jeff Ward, but this year's winner was Broc Glover… We tested a handful of Suzuki play bikes. Our little-bike comparison included the DS80, DS100 and DS185. 20 Years Ago December 3, 1997 Our European correspondent Alan Cathcart took a spin on the Castrol Honda RC45 that carried John Kocinski to the FIM World Superbike title in 1997. The bike was featured on the cover 20 years ago… Also pictured on the cover was a photo from the opening round of the AMA /PJ1 Arenacross Series in Iowa. Texan Brad Woosey was the big winner that weekend, as he came away with a couple of main-event victories… Johnny Campbell, Tim Staab and Greg Bringle combined efforts to win the Baja 1000. One of the big stories of the year was the sabotage attempt that forced the start of the race to be delayed. A double row of railroad ties that were spiked with nails blocked a drainage culvert under Interstate 15 that was a part of the racecourse… Jeff Murphy topped the Kyle Fleming Memorial Amateur Motocross in Blythe, California...
