50 Years Ago December 7, 1967
A classic photo, taken by John Shedd, of CZ-mounted Roger DeCoster was
featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. The Europeans were in
town for the Los Angeles International "Moto-Cross" at Forst Ranch. The top
Americans were struggling to keep up with the Euros, such as DeCoster,
Joel Robert, Torsten Hallman and Ake Jonsson. Some of the top-placing
Americans included Gary Conrad, Eddie Mulder and Chuck Minert…
Triumph-mounted Dusty Coppage won the 192-
mile Barstow To Vegas National Hare & Hound.
40 Years Ago November 30, 1977
A Dale Brown photo of Brad Lackey winning his first 500cc Trans-AMA
motocross from the Sears Point final was featured on the cover 40 years
ago. Lackey might have taken the win but the king of the series was still the
king—Roger DeCoster. Chuck Sun wrapped up the 250cc Championship…
Nineteen-year-old Jeff Henning took the overall win at the Rattlesnake
National Enduro in Klamath Glenn, California… Russ Collins set a world
record by doing the first seven-second quarter mile on a motorcycle.
20 Years Ago November 26, 1997
Featured on the cover of Cycle News 20 years ago was our test of the 1998
Honda Interceptor and Steve Lamson winning the Elsinore Grand Prix.
Destry Abbott, Steve Drew, Mike Baker and Russ Pearson completed the
top five in the Hamel 100, the premier race of the weekend. The top three in the
50+ Expert class were John DeSoto, Gary Bailey and J.N. Roberts… Steve
Hatch won the AMA Hare Scrambles National at Seattle International Raceway
but Rodney Smith took the title… Jeff Emig was crowned King of Bercy.

30 Years Ago December 2, 1987
Dan Smith got a spot on the cover for winning the final AMA National Hare &
Hound in Reno, Nevada. Smith shared the cover with New Jersey's own Kevin
Bennett, who won the Sandy Lane National Enduro, the final National of the
year… The NHRA/Castrol GTX Motorcycle Championship was decided at the
final round in Pomona, California. Kawasaki's David Schultz took the win and
championship... President Ronald Reagan
shook hands with the winning U.S. MX des
Nations team (Jeff Ward, Rick Johnson and
Bob Hannah) at the White House.
