"We knew it was going to be a
fight for us," Arredondo said. "It
is really special, the 50th anni-
versary, and we really gave it all
to try and win. We tried to stick
to our plan the whole time and
were surprised in some places
where we made up time.
"We had some problems with
crashed, his bike sliding along
and hitting at least one person
who had to go to the hospital
with a broken leg and other
injuries.
SCORE officials were not
happy about that, feeling it was
reckless riding on Young's part
and later penalized the 1X team
30 minutes for unsportsmanlike
conduct, making their official
time 21 hours, 26 minutes and
47 seconds. Thus, the Arredon-
do team's 21:07:17 officially won
it, the time good for third vehicle
overall. (The Samuels crew's
chances of retaining the 1X plate
get out of fourth gear too much
coming in after Santa Rita. It [the
transmission] was pretty much
toast and making a bunch of
noise so that was my main issue.
It was a really gnarly course and
I'm tired after being on the bike
for six hours. I left it all out there
for sure."

winning the golden anniversary
of the world's oldest and most
famous desert race for his first
time, 23-year-old Young cel-
ebrated when he hit the finish
podium (located after the actual
finish line) by doing a small jump
or wheelie, but the ramp was
wet with the night's dew and he
(Right) Jeff Benrud won the
Pro Moto Ironman in 30:37:13,
beating the second-place rider
by an hour and 11 minutes,
despite falling many times in
the seemingly endless silt beds.
