50 Years Ago November 23, 1967
A Walt Mahony photo of Shorty Seaboume was featured on the cover of
Cycle News 50 years ago. Seaboume, who we said was the shortest rider in
professional AMA competition, scored the biggest win of his career when he
topped the Ascot 20-lap State Championship season final, earning him national
number 27… We had big coverage of the Hopetown Grand Prix from Northern
California. Some of the racers that competed included Torsten Hallman, Ake
Johnsson, Joel Robert, Roger DeCoster and
Dave Bickers.
40 Years Ago November 16, 1977
Our cover story 40 years ago was the Dirt Diggers Grand Prix from Trabuco
Canyon, California. Larry Roeseler was the top 500cc Jr./Expert rider; Dick
Mann won the Old Timers Master class and Goat Breker topped the 250
Pro class. Sue Fish won the Women's class… Bob Balentine was the big
winner at the California City Grand Prix… Marty Smith (500cc) and Warren
Reid (250cc) made it a Honda sweep at the Trans-AMA Motocross in Puyallup,
Washington… We interviewed privateer Husqvarna MX rider Chuck Sun.

It was shootout time 20 years ago, and we compared the latest 125cc
motocrossers from Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and KTM. The winner?
Yamaha YZ125… We featured a Time Remembered piece on Jim Pomeroy…
Racers were crowned at the CCS final road races at Daytona. Mike Hale,
Michael Barnes and Dave Sadowski were the big winners in the Sunoco
Race Fuels Formula USA Series final; Sadowski took the championship…
We had the first ride on the 1998 Suzuki GSXR750… Ty Davis won the 100s
M.C. National Hare & Hound.

30 Years Ago November 18, 1987
We showed you the latest motorcycles from BMW, one being the R100RS that
was pictured on the cover 30 years ago… KTM's Kevin Hines clinched his
first AMA National Enduro title at the Checkpoint M.C.'s Bad Mountain Enduro
in Lucerne Valley, California. Larry Roeseler took the overall win, but second
was good enough to give Hines the 1987 title, the first non-Husqvarna rider
to do so since 1970… Gary Roach won the Fall Fireball GNCC in Tarentum,
Pennsylvania… Terry Kizer won the King of the Hill
IDBA U.S. Nationals in Alabama.
