We focused our attention on road riding in our latest issue of Cycle News 50
years ago. We covered two big events: A ride to Death Valley, California and a
ride to Ensenada, B.C., Mexico. An estimated 10,000 riders participated in the
Death Valley run, which might have had something to do with bikinis and the
annual Beauty Contest. Our cover photo came from the Grand Parade from
Ensenada… The racing action from Ascot was still going strong, as were Dan
Haaby and Sammy Tanner… We covered the
Jackass Enduro from Red Mountain, California.

We ran an article on how to make your Bultaco perform better and last
longer. The tips came from Gary Bailey who was pictured in action on the
cover 40 years ago… We ran a photo of Jimmy Weinert who was testing a
new plastic boot from Scott Goggles… Roger DeCoster and Bob Hannah
were at it again, battling for victory in the Trans-AMA MX Series in Plano,
Texas. "The Man" DeCoster came out on top with a 1-4, topping Hannah's
DNF-1… We covered all of the speed action from Bonneville.
